US political commentator Matt Walsh took Te Pāti Māori MPs to task for staging a haka against the ACT party’s David Seymour’s Treaty Principles Bill, which seeks to enshrine equality under the law.
“We should take note of this as an example,” said Walsh.
“This is the result of all the kowtowing, bowing, and submitting. The Māori are openly campaigning against equal rights and threatening politicians who don’t align with their views. This is the sort of outcome Western societies can expect when they begin apologising for their own existence,” he told his audience.
Remarking on Labour MP Willie Jackson’s attacks on Seymour, Walsh said “This is how you know these people have no argument. They’re only capable of shouting ‘shame’ and resorting to personal attacks, to the point that they repeatedly get thrown out of Parliament. Meanwhile, David Seymour sits there calmly, saying he wants equality.”
Walsh doesn’t hold back: “New Zealand should have adopted a long time ago the policy of denying any special privileges in the first place and refusing to apologise when there’s nothing to apologise for. Or how about this: say to any indigenous group anywhere in the world, ‘You apologise first.’ Make a big show of it—fall to your knees and apologise for all the terrible things your ancestors did. You apologise first; lead by example.”
Editor’s note: TPM’s controversial haka has reportedly garnered some international support as well.
