Can Luxon’s corporate expertise drive reform?

Summarised by Centrist

With the election of National’s Christopher Luxon to the office of Prime Minister, journalist Philip Crump (aka Thomas Cranmer) writes “New Zealand appoints its Chief Restructuring Officer”.

Luxon, as a restructuring expert, prioritises placing the right people in key roles. Peter Hughes, the current head of the Public Service has already tendered his resignation.

Crump writes National already plans on  6.5% reduction in back-office spending alone, which is “on top of the 1 or 2% already announced by Labour” .

“The challenge will be to ensure that austerity does not impact frontline services.  There is already apprehension in some departments about what services could be affected by the imminent cuts” he says.

Luxon’s promise of economic management resonates with voters disillusioned by previous spending initiatives yielding little.

Will Luxon’s corporate insight translate into effective governance and meaningful reform?
