Trotter: Disinformation is as rampant on the left as it is on the right

Summarised by Centrist

Chris Trotter, in “Disinformation from the left”, discusses its risks and proliferation during a crisis, gives a brief historical overview of the concept and argues NZ’s “progressive” left’s disinfo is more rampant than any from the right.

As an example, Trotter offers a critique of Pere Huriwai-Seger’s (of the far-left Aotearoa Liberation League) recent Instagram message on the Israel-Palestine conflict. He accuses Huriwai-Seger of skewing the narrative to undeservedly paint New Zealand as a direct player in the conflict.

Trotter says by distorting facts and leveraging emotional triggers, Huriwai-Seger perpetuates misinformation, which says NZ “long supports the colonisation of Palestine”.

Huriwai-Seger’s selective presentation of history and events, like the Surafend massacre, is designed to draw unreal parallels between Palestinians and Māori.

“Imagine the reaction of The Disinformation Project (TDP) if they had found a video presentation promoting right-wing disinformation and hate on such a scale,” says Trotter.
