Luxon pushes for seamless trans-Tasman digital ID and travel

Summarised by Centrist

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon wrapped up the annual Australia-New Zealand leaders’ meeting in Queenstown by emphasising efforts to create “frictionless” business and travel between the two countries.

A key focus is simplifying regulatory standards and advancing digital identity initiatives that work seamlessly across both sides of the Tasman.

Luxon pointed to progress already made, such as harmonising building-product standards and trialling visa-free entry for Chinese nationals arriving from Australia. He specifically highlighted opportunities to synchronise digital ID systems and drivers licences, allowing them to be recognised in both countries. This would reduce minor travel “irritants,” such as Australians needing passports for ID in New Zealand bars.

While past attempts at fully passport-less travel stalled over national sovereignty concerns, Luxon said there is still room to streamline cross-border movement through other digital measures.

The leaders also discussed synchronising approaches to emerging issues like artificial intelligence and environmental regulation, aiming to foster closer trans-Tasman economic integration in a volatile global environment.

Luxon described the relationship with Albanese as “good friends” with “good chemistry,” underscoring the importance of peer support between leaders as they navigate complex bilateral challenges.
