New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met in Queenstown for their annual Trans-Tasman talks, expressing a shared commitment to lifting living standards and strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

A focus of the discussions was making it easier to do business across the Tasman by simplifying regulations and standards in sectors like construction, healthcare, and manufacturing. Luxon described the relationship as “as strong as it’s ever been” and praised the good chemistry between the two leaders.

The leaders also addressed global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the tense geopolitical rivalry between China and the United States in the Pacific.

Both leaders agreed that managing competition between China and the US is critical to regional security, with concerns over China’s “dangerous and provocative” actions in the South China Sea taking centre stage.

University of Otago politics researcher Nicholas Khoo described the meeting as marking “a new era of cooperation,” noting that New Zealand’s close alliance with Australia is a key pillar of stability in turbulent times.

The summit also saw the renewal of joint standards arrangements between Australian and New Zealand agencies to boost economic growth through streamlined regulations.

The talks ended on a lighthearted note, with Albanese joking about a “cuddle” as the two leaders left the media conference arm-in-arm.
