Stressing out over social justice and leftwing causes may be linked to your mental health.
A recent study from the University of Turku in Finland looked at social justice attitudes, often termed “woke” beliefs, and their impact on mental well-being. The study, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, introduced a new scale to measure these attitudes and found a notable link between stronger alignment with “woke” beliefs and higher instances of anxiety and depression, coupled with reduced feelings of happiness.
According to PsyPost, respondents who exhibited: “Agreement with the statement ‘If white people have on average a higher income than black people, it is because of racism’ exhibited the largest positive correlation with anxiety and depression, and the largest negative correlation with happiness.”
The results indicate that male participants showed lower agreement compared to females. Also, pro social justice attitudes, popular amongst left-wing political affiliations and fields like social sciences, are not as prevalent in Finland as the media might suggest.
