On Saturday, 21 June, Destiny Church followers held their protest dubbed “in defence of faith, flag and family.”
Church leader Brian Tamaki’s supporters marched down Queen St chanting “no immigration without assimilation” and declaring Christianity the country’s “official religion.”
Tamaki ordered “tear it, boys”, as flags representing Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Palestine, Pride, and the media were torn up or stomped on.
According to RNZ, a rainbow flag and a flag representing the mainstream media were briefly lit on fire before being put out. Fire crews were called but left without taking action.
Police monitored the protest. No arrests were made.

Tamaki said foreign ideologies were overtaking the country.
A small group of counter-protesters were also on scene. One sign read, “Zionists also kill Christians in Gaza.”
Tamaki’s team shielded him from press and public alike. His media team livestreamed the event. After declaring victory over “evil spirits,” Tamaki departed as a Christian rock band played on.
Acting Prime Minister David Seymour condemned the protest as “un-Kiwi,” calling for tolerance and inclusion.
“What I take issue with is his attacks on other New Zealander’s right to practice their faith just as he has a right to practice his,” Seymour said.
Some onlookers watched in confusion. Others debated theology, even among Tamaki’s own followers.
