Wong marathon questions become test of political and media integrity

Summarised by Centrist

Independent researcher Penny Marie drew attention to Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong crossing the Auckland Marathon finish line wearing a bib registered to another woman.

Opportunity said Wong bought the entry from a runner who became unwell. A Facebook commenter claiming to be the original entrant supported that account and said Wong completed the 11km race.

The official result placed the entrant in the 20-to-24 age category, although Wong is 38.

Stuff declared the mystery “easily explained”, describing those examining the discrepancy as “internet sleuths”.

But Wong later acknowledged that the official transfer wasn't completed before the deadline and offered to have the result disqualified. Opportunity also claimed race officials knew about the late transfer and allowed her to participate, but Auckland Marathon organisers had not confirmed that account when the NZ Herald reported it.

Penny Marie then examined the published timing records and found that the bib showed no result for the “Blitz the Bridge” segment, despite the 11km course crossing Auckland Harbour Bridge. Other competitors’ records displayed a bridge time.

“Did she run the entire race from start to finish, yes or no?” Penny Marie asked. “Did she complete the entire run with the bib number she was photographed wearing at the finish line?”

She accused mainstream outlets of attacking her credibility instead of examining her evidence.

“When I do their job, they twist it and make it out like I’m crazy rather than what I’m researching,” she said.

Penny Marie went further, alleging that “the media is behind this” and that Opportunity had not been frank.

Editor’s note: No evidence currently establishes collusion between the party and any newsroom. The missing bridge split could also result from a timing-chip or results-system error and does not prove Wong failed to complete the course.

What remains unresolved is why some media declared the matter settled before organisers had publicly confirmed the party’s account or explained the missing timing result.

With Wong presented as a potential election kingmaker, this is about whether Opportunity gave voters a complete account and whether journalists independently verified it before dismissing the researcher asking questions.
