Currently, over 88 million people speak endangered languages. Approximately 100 languages are at risk of total extinction within decades if no action is taken. 

The top four countries with the most endangered languages are Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and US Indigenous communities.

However, new AI tools are aiding in preserving endangered languages, while efforts to teach school children Te Reo Māori in New Zealand, and Hawaiian in the US, have shown success.
