The Impact of DEI statements on academic freedom and nonconformity in universities

DEI promotes groupthink on campus.

Reason.com reports on the case of a prominent researcher, Yoel Inbar, denied a position at UCLA. He is but one of countless examples showing how Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) statements are being used as political litmus tests in hiring and academic processes.

Inbar holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from Cornell University and completed the obligatory submission of a statement on DEI. Reason reports that he even aligns with the prevailing political views within UCLA’s psychology department.

But on his podcast, he voiced what were reportedly relatively moderate concerns regarding whether ideological pressures inherent in DEI statements may hinder the diversity of thought. As a consequence of a petition, signed by only 66 students, UCLA opted not to extend an offer to the researcher.

DEI abuses like these are creating an environment of conformity and self-censorship and the promotion of groupthink, on university campuses, impacting both students and professors.
