Stanford adds climate change label but leaves curriculum content untouched

August 19, 2026

“We’ll just signal it now and signpost where that is.”

Education Minister Erica Stanford has directed officials to put the words “climate change” back into the year 0–10 science and social sciences curricula following criticism that the newly published documents omitted the term entirely.

Stanford insists the underlying material will not change because climate change is already covered. “We’ll just signal it now and signpost where that is,” she said.

However, Stuff found no references to “climate change”, “global warming” or “fossil fuels”. Sea-level rise appears twice, while “emissions” refers only to light emissions.

The move follows Prime Minister Christopher Luxon saying the government’s priority was getting children to attend school and master reading and maths before subjects such as climate change.
