The Department of Conservation (DOC) faces a severe budget shortfall, lacking sufficient funding for basic operations and struggling with a $300 million maintenance backlog.
Despite this financial crisis, DOC plans to offer staff up to a $3500 bonus each for attaining proficiency in the Māori language. Yet no positions require te reo Māori for practical communication at work.
This raises concerns about fiscal responsibility. With 2500 staff, the potential cost of this bonus could divert resources that could otherwise address much-needed facility repairs and maintenance across the country.
