NZ and the Middle East powder keg: Geoffrey Miller says we have a role to play

Miller  notes that as tensions in the Middle East escalate, Foreign Minister Winston Peters has consistently addressed the deteriorating situation and its impacts on global security. In May, he called for an immediate cessation of armed conflict in Gaza, reflecting concerns over potential miscalculations by Israel and Iran.

New Zealand’s response also includes diplomatic efforts. Peters met with key regional players, such as Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during trips to Cairo and Istanbul. These visits aimed to gather insights and support ceasefire efforts.

Moreover, Trade Minister Todd McClay’s visits to the Gulf states have provided valuable regional perspectives, which he shares with Cabinet colleagues. New Zealand’s strategic focus remains on the Indo-Pacific, but its involvement in Middle Eastern issues underscores its commitment to global peace.
