In “Canada launches UN declaration targeting online ‘disinformation’”, the UN Global Declaration Information Integrity Online is a call to action “to help ensure the strength of democratic processes and to protect fundamental rights”.

The declaration, which NZ along with 29 other nations have signed, is sponsored by Canada and the Netherlands. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly says that “Rapid advances in technology — particularly generative AI — make it more and more difficult to tell fact from fiction”.

Signatories need to “take active steps to address misinformation and disinformation targeted at women, LGBTIQ+ persons, persons with disabilities and Indigenous Peoples”. It also says signatories must “refrain” from restricting freedom of expression under the guise of countering disinformation.

Canada has been particularly active in attempting to coordinate an international response to what it calls “foreign state-sponsored disinformation” and “evolving foreign threats to democracy”.
