Corruption creeps up New Zealand

November 14, 2023

The start of a trend?

Summarised by Centrist

Calvin London, a compliance and ethics expert, says New Zealand’s slipping position in the Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) may be concerning.

Despite retaining equal second place with Finland in the most recent CPI (2022), New Zealand’s score decreased, indicating a potential downward trend. This decline is attributed to three key factors:

Organised international crime, facilitation payments – small payments made to expedite routine government actions but can often blur into bribes, and unchecked money laundering.

London says that it will be revealing to see if NZ’s CPI trend continues downward in the next report, or if the current status is just a temporary setback.
