Luxon calls for united NZ approach to deepen ties with India

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has called for a coordinated “all of New Zealand” effort to deepen ties with India, calling it a geopolitical heavyweight and rising economic partner.

Speaking at the India New Zealand Business Council summit in Auckland, Luxon said New Zealand must “dramatically lift its game” to seize opportunities in the world’s most populous democracy.

“India is our largest source of skilled migrants and second-largest source of international students,” Luxon said.

“Indian-Kiwis are, on average, younger, better educated and higher earning than the general population… In short, they are making a massive contribution to New Zealand.”

Despite this, India accounts for just 1.5% of New Zealand’s exports. Luxon said launching free trade negotiations marked “a breakthrough” and pledged to expand New Zealand’s diplomatic presence in India by 60% to accelerate the relationship.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita also met with Foreign Minister Winston Peters to discuss bilateral ties and the rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Peters condemned the recent attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and urged de-escalation, offering New Zealand’s support. “India’s rise has been a force for good in our region and the world,” he said.

Fonterra’s Simon Tucker said India poses tariff and regulatory challenges but offers potential for niche dairy exports, while Zespri’s Jason Te Brake cited 50% year-on-year growth. “There’s a pathway forward,” added Ashok Malik of The Asia Group. “India wants this agreement to succeed.”
